[ Keep it Simple + Stylish Holiday Dressing Tips ]

1. Begin pulling pieces from your closet and putting them in a special section for holiday festivities. Rolling racks are tons of fun.

2. Play dress up and have fun making the pieces work in different ways. Find your best fitting pieces and work hard to style them many ways. I love trying on an outfit or two before I go to bed.

3. Try adding and subtracting accessories like jewelry, shoes, handbags, jackets, tights.

4. Although bling is nice, don’t overdo it… If you have bling in your outfit, make sure your look isn’t competing for attention. Balance

5. A 360 degree view – a plus when trying on looks.

6. If you need a new pair of shoes, buy smart, invest in a pair you will wear. Black patent is a classic investment.

Get Haute for the Holidays. xo Emily Arnim

{The Rose Family} Reality for a Cause

Rose Arrangements Created by Lily Paxson for Holly Rose Ribbon Foundation

The family that plays together stays together. The Rose Family once again came together to throw a Soiree benefitting The Holly Rose Ribbon FoundationI had the pleasure of attending with some very lovely ladies for an entertaining evening of a Live Bachelor Pad 3 Screening with Reality Star Erica Rose and family. The Capitol at St. Germain created a refreshing summer signature drink for the evening, a Rosetini made with watermelon, vodka, and St. Germain topped with pink rose petals. Light fare greeted the guests as they arrived for an up close and personal with The Rose Family. The Bachelor Pad 3 Episode was nothing short of sinfully entertaining, and Erica put on a good show as expected.

{The Counter Houston} Primo Gourmet Burger

My Burger Invention: 1/4 Lb Beef, Herb Goat Cheese Spread, Avocado with a Tangy Russian Dressing…Mmmm

The Dangerously Delicious Trio at The Counter – Houston {Sweet Potato Fries, Onion Strings, Parmesan Fries} Served with a Light Ranch Dressing

Couldn’t have loved my burger any more at The Counter on Washington. The gourmet build-your-own burger eatery created a perfectly balanced Beef, Herb Goat Cheese, Avocado, Russian Dressing- Delish! The warm brownie and ice-cream was sinful and unnecessary, but I enjoyed it!

My first gourmet build your own burger experience in Houston was surprisingly refreshing. The Counter Houston has a fabulous monthly changing beer experience and surprise menu items, giving you even more reasons to keep visiting. The combinations are endless… Be cautious to the number of people you fit in a booth and don’t put so many things on your burger that it is a total mess. :) Think balanced and minimally, enjoy inventing.

Oh the possibilities are endless…

Invent and Enjoy. Yours, Emily

{PH Design Shop} Lovely and then Some

My Fabulous White Leather Tassel Keychain

Well friends… I found a new shop in Rice Village Houston that I just adore and just had to share. PH Design Shop is lovely, amusing, and studious all rolled into one. Around every corner you’ll find yourself picking up trinkets, reading the fine print, laughing to yourself, and then walking around again. They have a splendid selection of books, stationary, leather goods, gifts and more to peek your curiosity. The finds within these four walls, are not those you see anywhere else, PH Design Shop is truly a one of a kind. My brief stop heralded this lovely White Leather Tassel Key Chain, some humorous Cards and a great Past Times Book.

Next time you visit Rice Village, make a stop into Sweet Paris for a Crêpe and Cappuccino, then walk a few steps down to PH Design Shop, you will be intrigued.

XO- Emily Arnim

PS. My purse swallows things and this fab key chain is impossible to miss and even more fun to hold! I will never lose my keys again…

In the spirit of Foodie Friday at The Suburban Diary, I leave you with a dreamy glimpse of Sweet Paris in Rice Village, Houston. The pictures tell the story and I hope you thoroughly enjoy them. Sweet Paris is a lovely find.

Yet another beautiful, fun, fabulous, heart-warming event held in honor and celebration of the Holly Rose Ribbon Foundation {The Holly Rose Ribbon Foundation raises funds to educate, treat, assist and heal women going through the struggles of cancer}. Oh the fancy hats and stilettos were out for 5th Annual Run for the Roses held at Mo’s in Houston! How do you air kiss in these beautiful hats anyway? {More on hats here} Wearing a hat is an art in itself… Which I was unable to master while wearing mine. However challenged the ladies may have felt, they sure dressed the part to celebrate the Kentucky Derby and support a beautiful cause… Texas Style of course!

Real Housewives of Orange County Give Glamping a Bad Name

Real Housewives of Orange County Glamping at El Capitan Photo: She Knows Reality TV

After watching the Real Housewives of Orange County Glamping Episode, Above the Fire Line, I thought the Housewives severely damaged the term “Glamping” for anyone watching! Cabins, cooking yourself, sub par accommodations, that is not glamping, they simply roughed it at the El Capitan Canyon in Goleta,California!

Glamping at Paws Up Luxury Dude Ranch in Greenough, Montana

If you want a true taste of Glamping, Glamorous Camping, there are some fine places around the United States to go. My personal travel wish list is reigning with a trip to Paws Up Luxury Dude Ranch in Greenough, Montana. I am still waiting to visit the fabulous 37,000 acre ranch nestled in the mountainous region of Montana. Paws Up is absolutely breathtaking and the reviews are RAVING! From Haute Cuisine, to Butlers, to Sumptuous Beds, I cannot wait to visit this beautiful site in the middle of stunning nature- I cannot wait to experience what True Glamping is all about… LOVE!

Cindi Rose: Houston Artist, Mother, Philanthropist Creates Silhouette of Ashley Judd

World Renowned Silhouette Artist Cindi Rose Profiles the Beautiful Silhouette of Ashley Judd Photo By: Herb Hochman, Houston

One of my very favorite women, Cindi Rose, had the pleasure of creating one of her World Renowned Hand-Cut Silhouettes for Ashley Judd at The Children’s Assessment Center’s Intimate Luncheon held at the InterContinental Hotel Ballroom in Houston. Read more about the beloved event for a worthwhile cause from CultureMap Houston.

Cindi Rose travels all over the world and throughout Texas sharing her Heirloom Art, the Hand-Cut Silhouette, with all who sit in a chair beside her. I had the pleasure of meeting Cindi last year and I’ve been intrigued ever since! Not only is she gifted with an artistic talent, but Cindi has a beautiful soul, she is an amazing cook, and she is an encyclopedia of organic and natural knowledge - Cindi truly does it all! I have been in her home on several occasions with film crews, staff, friends, family and there she was cooking with her apron, giving herself egg facials and hand delivering her delicacies around herself effortlessly- YES, HERSELF!! I love to cook, but cooking, entertaining and working at the same time- I have no idea how she does it all! It is truly amazing to me how grounded and genuine Cindi is, so easy to become a different person when you are in the spotlight like she is, but she radiates with Genuine Love and I LOVE it!

Cindi Rose recently lost her sister to a long-time battle with cancer and continues to carry out the legacy of her sister through the Holly Rose Ribbon Foundation on top of her dedication to so many other worthwhile causes. Cindi Rose is a giver, a lover, a creator- How beautiful!

Emily Arnim

Cindi Rose- Off the Record and in My Heart

Every once in a while, life, luck and fate meet…And that happened when I met the gracious Cindi Rose. Cindi left a profound impression with her initial email to me, swept me away when she graciously agreed to come to my home for an event I hosted which raised funds for her charity, the Rose Ribbon Foundation, and once again amazed when she invited me into her world and took me under her wing to walk me around and introduce me to a powerful room of women! Had I not had this serendipitous experience of meeting Cindi, I wouldn’t have had these opportunities!

Nancy Marcus Golden, Anjelica Chapman, Emily Arnim, Cindi Rose, Lane Llewellyn

My initial correspondence with Cindi Rose began via email when I saw an article featuring her pet silhouettes she was doing at Tootsie’s. So, I shot her an email, and to my delight, she replied… Cindi and I continued our correspondence, and I was so overwhelmed by her influence and information that I could not even fathom writing a “note-worthy” story about someone like Cindi Rose! So… I put a link to her talent on my Pampered Pets Page, leaving the balance of information to churn. I had no idea the extent of her influence, until later in our correspondence, and then my realizations would naturally write her story on their own.

Cindi Rose

Two days before my Southern Hippie Party, I sent out a “shot in the dark” email to Cindi asking her if she would consider coming to the party and doing silhouettes for charity. The next thing you know I learned of her Rose Ribbon Foundation, and she agreed to come to the party, in spite of the fact that she was already fufilling a prior engagement of attending the Saks Fifth Avenue Fashion Show at the Nutcracker Market! Wow! I couldn’t believe it, I was estatic! Her World Renowned Hand-Cut Silhouettes would be a perfect parting gift for my guests! Love them!

Cindi Rose and Sonia Traugott

My Southern Hippie party ended late into the midnight hour, and Cindi stayed with us! I was engaged in deep conversation with Mrs. Cindi Rose, and a few of my friends. We gathered around my dining room table in deep conversation with Cindi and a few of my friends, and spoke of our Fathers, who had all passed…It was one of the deepest conversations I have ever had. A coincidental connection that all five of us had lost our Fathers early! Ironic!?

Cindi Rose and Monty Guidry

In the midst of our conversation, she invited me to her home for a test shoot of a reality show the following day. It was an initial introduction between the characters involved- and she wanted me to be a part of the show! I told her I would sleep on it and let her know the next day. I had morning plans, an evening wedding, and contemplated whether my decision to attend was the right one! How could I make a 3:00 at Cindi’s? I had to find a way for Blane to get home from school and have someone keep them until our babysitter arrived for us to attend a 6:00 wedding? But, I made it happen… thanks to a few saviors in my life, one of whom is a regular savior, my dearest Mom :)!

Next thing you know, 12:00 lunch with the husband, off to AT&T to replace a phone, Jos A Bank for a shirt for my husband, to the house to drop it off, then off to Cindi’s in Houston. How I managed- don’t know, but I did!

Cindi Rose in Miu Miu and Christian Dior at The Art of Conversation Luncheon

3:15: I am greeted at the door by one of Cindi’s house staff members and escorted past an exquisite display of homemade hors d’oeuvres and fresh fruit-flavored water. I met both of her gifted children, daughter Erica Rose, 28, you may know her, and her younger brother Ben Rose, 26, natural socializers. I’ve been more and more observant of the saying…“If we were supposed to talk more than we listen, we would have two mouths and one ear.” – Mark Twain. Erica and Ben were raised to be natural listeners and conversationalists- it was both evident and intriguing! I also met various members of The Rose Family Entourage: House Staff, Managers, Publicist, Producers, Personal Trainer, Beauty Guru, Astrologer, etc… Very interesting!

Cindi cooks every night… That afternoon cooked up a to die for Turkey Stew and White Truffle Oil Rice combination for all of the guests! I need to get my hands on the recipe! Now, after about two and a half hours at Cindi’s absorbing the scene, it was time to go… I somehow made it home to Katy through Friday rush hour traffic in 30 minutes around 5:00 !!! Seriously unheard of! We had a driver hired for the wedding because it was in Houston; he took Greg first, then turned around to come to pick me up and deliver me to their reception just in time to see the newlyweds’ entrance! Amanda and Brian are our dear friends, who live in New Jersey, so we just don’t get to see enough of them; so, I was desperate to celebrate with them for their momentous occasion! :)

And once again, somehow on my way out of the door, Cindi graciously made a call, or sent an email, and I was invited to an event she was chairing at the Junior League, The Art of Conversation on Monday, the 3rd, just days later! I will say that I owe her a world of gratitude… She introduced me to everyone at The Art of Conversation, names that you may not recognize, and some you may, but a force of powerful, gifted and driven individuals. I walked away with more than I can process at my normal speed; I am taking this all in, and going to take it where I can. Without Cindi, I would have never been in a room and introduced to such centers of influence like this so early in my blogging life; it will give me an advantage, a leap forward and inspiration from people that have blazed their trails! She believed in me and exceeded my expectations beyond the grasp of my imagination.

Cindi Rose and Cynthia Sinatra

I thank you Cindi Rose, for inviting me into your world. I hope this experience will sustain my insight and continue to inspire me to create my dream of sharing knowledge with the world. I hope I deliver to women, and men for that matter, something they can take with them on every post I write. I will tell all of you that I believe whole-heartedly everything I write; sometimes my mind will change; sometimes it is hard to practice what you preach, but I learn as I write as well… and nothing says it when reading the The Suburban Diary but…. “Absorb what is useful, reject what is useless, and add what is specifically your own.” -Bruce Lee I mean, need I say more??

Thank you all for believing in me and reading what I write. I will always deliver my heart or nothing at all! You can expect more posts on my encounters, the events I attend, the trials and errors, and the persons that I meet who influence my writing! I have so many things to write on the depth and talent of Cindi, and I look forward to sharing all of them with you!!!

Simple Name Tag Etiquette- File This!

At some point in our lives we’ve all worn a name tag. I recently discovered what side it should be worn on- and I didn’t even know there was a side!! Whether you are at a business function, church, an event or your child’s school… There is always a time when you will- and should know- this cardinal rule of Name Tag Etiquette!

I thought about writing this post yesterday when I was attending a luncheon, and here we are today…

A name tag should always be worn on your right side… Although it is easier for a right-handed person to place a name tag on their left side… Think twice!! Shake with your right hand, put name tag on your right side, so it is easier for the person shaking your hand to make contact with your name, be reminded of your name and make eye contact with you!

Ultimately we should be proud of our names, we should want to be identified by our faces and our names together, and we want people to remember us. This is also a comfort measure for the other person when they draw a blank trying to remember what your name is. We don’t want to make the awkward stare to your name tag on the left side- it would be obvious- so wear it on your right side friends!

Meeting Tory Burch and Ken Downing Today

Today was definitely a fabulous day in the life of The Suburban Diary and for myself! I have been a huge fan of Tory Burch for about 5 years or so and absolutely adore her preppy chic style! I own a few clothing pieces, a dozen or so pairs of shoes, a purse and a few bracelets! Definitely have a tiny bit of a Tory addiction to her classic preppy style… I can relate!

Tory Burch was introduced by the insightful and inspirational Ken Downing, Fashion Director of Neiman Marcus… Ken is a bright personality with an eye for fashion and forward thinking- it was a huge surprise to have him there- I read his regular fashion emails and live by them! Ken Downing tells you what’s going to happen before it trends and what you can expect in the upcoming season. Ken Downing sets the trends for the Neiman’s shoppers all over the world and so the world turns!

I was blown away by Tory Burch’s easy-going personality and grace… I felt like I was listening to a personal conversation in her own home as I absorbed her dialog with Ken Downing. She talked, listened, and answered questions when we personally talked to her and took pictures, not the slightest bit put off or pretentious! I was blown away and don’t know what I had expected her to be like- but she seems like a beautiful person through and through- and I love her even more now!

What I took away from the event…

#1 LOVE NAVY- Did you know that for the first two years of Tory Burch she never used black?!? Very interesting! Tory said this as models donned navy and black in separate pieces and navy dresses paired with black shoes. Mix navy and black, be confident and make it work for you! Ken Downing said that Coco Chanel herself was a huge fan of navy and black… If Coco loved navy and black- wear it in confidence!

#2 “COLOR ELEVATES MOOD,” Tory Burch.- Feeling a little down, start your day off on the wrong foot, need to cheer up a friend or colleague?!? Put on some color to elevate your mood and you will radiate to others! Wear Color in Confidence! And again the reminder from both of them… Own Colored Jeans!

#3 MIX YOUR JEWELRY- Tory Burch said, “Mix real and costume and never have rules about it!” What a statement from TB! I love my fine jewels from my husband, so I tend to wear just those jewels and put away all of my costume jewelry for a rainy day… I need to bring it out, layer it with other pieces, layer necklaces, stack bracelets and be creative! (I even forgot to wear my black leather Tory Burch wrap bracelet with gold studs- just because I tend to not explore my jewelry options and stick with my tried and true!- Prime example of not mixing when I should!)

#4 TORY SUNGLASSES ROCK- My bestest Ashley and I were in love with Tory’s new aviator sunglasses that the models were wearing! We both had to get them. We ended up with different styles and couldn’t be happier… Not only are they cheaper than most designer sunglasses, but they are made by the exact same manufacturer as Chanel… We talked to the manufacturer’s rep who was visiting the store, and she said that when Tory Burch was negotiating the deal with them to make the glasses, she wanted the same great quality but wanted to sell them for much less… What a gem! (So how much is Chanel making off of us?!?) Ken and Tory both swore there was a “Sunglass Fairy” because their glasses get lost all the time- hence the nice price point! Here are my fab finds with precious details…

Had such a wonderful time and spent the day turning over in my mind the inspiring advice that I will remember forever! Walked away with a fabulous pair of TB Jeans, TB Aviators and these items on my TB Wish List… I will have to disclose my other purchases later!! ;) Tory Burch is a line full of great staples!!!

I love this Tory Burch Gabardine Tuxedo… It is beautiful on and off the hanger and especially with these fabulous Gold and Black Heels! They didn’t have the tuxedo in my size, but I will try it on as soon as they get it in! What a wardrobe staple!! I personally haven’t jumped on board with the ever popular bow blouse shown with this tuxedo, but I know that I will find the perfect top to go underneath! Tory Burch is a line full of great staples!!!

LOVE LOVE LOVE!!!

Special day today!!! Lunch at Mariposa in Neiman Marcus and enjoyed a wonderful Bistro Salad with perfect company, watched a fashion show and listened to a great fashion dialog between Ken Downing and Tory Burch, took pictures and shook hands, and bought some nice pieces today… Definitely at the top of my list of fashion experiences… I was on Cloud Nine!

I love it #1 Tucked in shorts, #2 Paired with skinny jeans and riding boots, #3 Cord leggings and riding boots, #4 With a jacket straight leg jeans and flats (my list is in no particular order)!! Do you have any other ideas on how to wear this shirt? Please comment if you do!!!

I asked Elizabeth Lockhart, Partner in Southern Hippie, to give us some style advice for this Bella Dahl Blouse and here is what she had to say… “Bella Dahl blouses can be worn from season to season.  You can throw one on with a pair of colored jeans, a dressy maxi skirt, or a pair of shorts during the warm months.  These blouses are a must have and I promise that once you purchase one you will be back for another one…maybe even in the same color!  This is a purchase that you will NOT regret!  The white button-up is a great addition to a woman’s white blouse collection.”

This Bella Dahl blouse is SOFT and effortless- A Wardrobe Staple!! Once you feel Bella Dahl- you will know why it isn’t hard to be hooked! Fashion Houston- Loved it!

So I attended Fashion Houston a couple of weeks ago and it was FABULOUS! It was my first time to officially be seated at a fashion show- and now I know it will not be my last. The husband was hunting in South Texas, I rounded up tickets last minute, put on a dress I had worn before and Voila scored a wonderful evening!

When we arrived to the valet line (BONUS- I LOVE VALET) there was a stream of photographers, a red carpet and a step and repeat… So this is what Hollywood is like! LOL! It is very intense and overwhelming I wasn’t prepared to step out of the car to be ushered down the red carpet, up the stairs and stand there for a barrage of photographers to snap away- I was a little overwhelmed!! I guess in this instance, practice makes perfect, and I need more practice!!

We walked into the Audi Pavilion which was streaming a live dj, this massive white tent in front of the Wortham Center was lit with red and white lights, contemporary furniture, buzzing people dressed to the nines sipping cocktails, and a few little shops setup inside the tent. I think they could have definitely done more to get a variety of boutiques in there, but it was probably safer without them! There was a VIP lounge which we had access to, but we didn’t make it over there before the show began.

My two partners in crime for the night spent the cocktail hour shopping the rock jeweler, Vita New York. They scored several amazing pieces, very original! I couldn’t make up my mind so I didn’t buy anything, and now regretting it! I had a cocktail and glass of champagne and before you know it- it was showtime! (We also had to trek across the street to go to the ladies room… huge faux pas Fashion Houston!)

We made our way into Wortham Center where it was boasting amazing music in the foyer setup for the fashion show. There were two bars with stacked lines, but we waited patiently and I got my glass of bubbly! We found out during intermission that there was a Grey Goose Saks VIP lounge we could have been in… Oops! Anyhow… Made it to our 3rd row seats and enjoyed the music, people watching and the energy buzzing around. Then it was showtime… :)

Kate Kills pretty was the first designer to rock her duds across the runway. Spring 2012 was sheer, beachy, tribal, nude with electric lemon-lime and fuchsia, throw navy in there too! (Sidenote: I did notice on the last episode of RHOBH that both Kyle and Adriene were wearing the shocking lemon-lime color). Czar Galindo black and white, long, flowing, strapless, nudes, whites, feminine look… Which appears is going to be strong for Spring 2012. Saks Menswear Fall/Winter… All I can say is whew… Good looking, perfect, and who knows if they are into girls or not, but they are pretty easy on the eyes. The trend for men is Gray, Charcoal, Camel… Keep the black out of your closet boys and keep the gray coming. Mix with camel, white, denim and you sir have a fall/winter wardrobe guaranteed to please the “Miss” in your life! Think equestrian, hunter, New England, country living and tailored take baggy out of your wardrobe and enjoy a smoother look! Mix and match your wardrobe basics! Carmen Marc Valvo was feminine black and white, sheer and lots of long. Definitely a more relaxed chic style but still defined and accentuating our best features! Check out Caroline Berg Photographyfor some great pictures she took that night! Most of my pictures were taken from Royal Beauty Designs.

My Buzzword Summary for Spring 2012 from Fashion Houston: Is relaxed, but refined, feminine, chic, nude, white, sheer, long, beachy, tribal, throw some navy and black in there too- graphic and color blocked. Take what you want from these buzzwords and work with your wardrobe. Turquoise and coral necklaces bring them out and layer them with other necklaces or wear them as chokers! (Chokers are going to be hot for Spring)

During intermission there was a fabulous VIP Lounge we enjoyed with a dj and free Grey Goose drinks… Bonus!! We wrapped up the show with a stop at the Audi VIP lounge in the tent, and apparently most of the VIPs were at after-parties for the designers because the tent was rather dead… But we had a great time sitting on a comfy couch mingling on our own! And that folks is a wrap…

Fashion Houston was an energizing experience if you love fashion and can appreciate it with an open mind. Dressing up, the perks, a night out and people watching seal the deal! I will definitely be there next year, and probably for at least 2 nights!

Fashion’s Night Out Wrap Up!

Although I did not have front row seats for the “Invite Only” Fashion’s Night Out Fashion Show at the Galleria, I had a more than fabulous time with a perfect group of girls! It was a seamless evening (besides the fact that I couldn’t find a purse I was on a mission to purchase)!

Our evening started off with a reservation at 5115 inside Saks, it is beautiful and amazing (I have always had a 5 Star Experience there)! We were seated promptly at one of about 5 tables occupied in the restaurant. They were filming a documentary about a model, so we peeped on that. The restaurant was quiet, so we were able to enjoy wonderful conversation and the serene ambiance! The waiter looked more like a model than a waiter… He clearly had model aspirations and somehow landed a waiting gig at 5115; his drink recommendations were slim. The food was incredible and the restaurant splits plates- Bonus! Each of us split with a friend, and we had more than enough to enjoy! My poblano soup and our pistachio encrusted chicken was FABULOUS!!! I kept thinking to myself how surreal and quiet it was in the restaurant, it is Fashion’s Night Out and 5115 was a ghost town, but it was heavenly and we had plenty of undivided attention. I knew the minute we walked out we would instantly be in another world…

And then we were… Music, shirtless waiters/models passing drinks and hors d’oeuvres, fashionistas, wannabes, socialites, models, people watchers and a vibrant ambiance! Walking around enjoying the scenery was enough for us. I was on the hunt for my Jimmy Choo Hobo and Tiffany Sunglasses, struck out on both! Then off to the Fashion Show…

A walk to the show found us in the middle of girls on stilts, entertainers, shoppers and sightseers; the Galleria Ice Rink had been transformed into a runway and cocktail party for the most serious Houston Shoppers and socialites. I wanted to be down there in a bad way, but had to be content with a balcony view… I vowed to myself to get an invitation next year! We watched the show from the balcony and enjoyed the atmosphere. We watched tall, thin models rock over the top, black, refined silhouettes and color blocked styles. The trends I’ve been reading about for fall were all over the runway! It was fabulous and I enjoyed every second of it, balcony views, butterflies in my stomach and all!!

Then off the Louis Vuitton to check on a repair and SMACK! They got me… I bought a beautiful champagne colored monogram shawl that I can wear in probably a dozen ways! A classic I know is a solid investment- I will keep it for so many years ahead! I now officially had my shopper’s high! (Please Note: A scarf is a great accessory you can wear so many times, with so many different outfits, in so many different ways!)

A few of the girls wrapped up our evening with a cocktail at RDG Bar Annie. We were whisked promptly to the beautiful 2nd floor patio and sipped exquisite cocktails, soaked up the evening’s cocktails with some fresh bread and had impeccable service! A perfect nightcap to our great girls night!

This was my second year to attend Fashion’s Night Out… This year was setup completely different from last year! Next year I will be prepared and be completely on top of my role as a blogger from my “courtside” seats!

Enjoy Fashion and Frills Suburban Diary Friends!

Art Show Etiquette- What I Need To Know

Well I have to say that I have NEVER attended an Art Show and now I have the upcoming artistic debut of my cousin, Susan McWilliams. So I guess I should know exactly what to do and how to practice “art show etiquette” for her fabulous event… Thought I would share what I have learned as I did some research today!!

What to Wear: Susan’s art is sophisticated and modern, not Boho, so I am thinking it is best to dress like I am going to cocktail party. Men will be in suits and slacks, I would hope not jeans, although it is possible to dress jeans up with a sports coat and nice shirt!

Eating and Drinking: Eat before, you definitely don’t want to drink on an empty stomach and make a spectacle of yourself. Also it would be in poor taste to head straight to the food and bar!

Conversation: Always try to make your way to the artist to introduce yourself and your date, say a few short words, do not engage in a lengthy conversation, pay a compliment or have a question ready. If you want to commission the artist for a private sale, give them your business card and expect a call after the show to make an appointment. Conversations with other guests should be about art, culture and events not about your problems! Keep the vibe creative and positive! Keep negative thoughts out of the environment!

Purchasing a Piece: Buying art from an emerging artist is an investment, if it you don’t see it that way, you probably are not at the right place. You can attend the show to support the artist or if you plan to invest in a piece for yourself or a client (from what I’ve read, the prices are firm and not negotiable so don’t haggle). You in no way have an obligation to buy if you attend a show, but the artist appreciates the presence of caring patrons!

Keep Your Hands to Yourself: Please do not touch the artwork… Especially when drinking!! If you damage a piece it is likely that you will be responsible!

Socialize not Sell: This is a great to socialize and network with a well-connected crowd, but now is not the time to sell your service or products!

Art is Haute Suburban Diary Friends! I cannot wait to invest in my first piece!

Need a Good Cause for Date Night?

August is Houston Restaurant Week 2011 benefitting the Houston Food Bank. You can dine at Houston’s finest restaurants for $35 for a 3-4 course dinner and $20 for a 2-3 course lunch. Be sure to make reservations online.  A tip when making reservations is to take the earliest reservation- it helps beat the crowd and avoid possible kitchen backups!

This is a huge week to dine out in Houston AND give back, when else can you dine at Tony’s for $35?  I’m still dying to try The Tasting Room myself! Download the free UrbanSpoon app on your iphone to check out the reviews of your top picks- make sure to give reviews yourself!  You can also check them out on online at urbanspoon.com.

Make date nights and lunch dates with your husband, your friend, Mom, Dad or Sister! Use this as a great reason to taste the Houston flavors and have some much needed quality time with the people you love- make it a surprise! I know we could all use some “quality time”.

If you have a great dining experience… Do share!

Dining Etiquette: 3 Tips for You

I recently hosted an etiquette dinner party for some of my girlfriends and it was a complete success!  Gigi Lewis, founding director of Club Etiquette in Houston, gave us so many wonderful tips which we will carry forward in our dining experiences.

Here are 3 tips I will share…

1. Hold red wine from the goblet when drinking and white wine from the stem of the glass, oh how lovely it looks.

2. Make a “b” with your left hand and a “d” with your right hand, your Bread plate is always on the left and Drinks always on the right.  Do not be the one at a seated dinner that takes someone else’s bread plate or glass.

3. Always move the spoon away from you when placing soup into your spoon, not towards you, then bring the soup to your mouth.

The quest for good etiquette will not stop here, I will continue to brush up on my practices.  I highly recommend taking etiquette lessons at some point in your life… Valuable knowledge for dinner parties, weddings, galas, and when seated at dinner with those of influence. You never know who is judging you while you eat… Sad, but true!

Food for thought: Here are some conversation rules for dinner parties via an article in the New York Times.  Very entertaining!

Bon Appétit!
